McCurdy Receives National Rural Water Association’s Ground Water Peer Leadership Award!

David McCurdy, Ground Water Specialist for the Atlantic States Rural Water Association, received highest honors from his peers when he was named the 2006 Ground Water Specialist of the Year.  Peer Leadership Awards were presented at NRWA’s 20th Annual In-Service Training Seminar held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The NRWA Peer Leadership Awards program was established to recognize the outstanding efforts of Rural Water Association representatives. Of all the Ground Water Specialist across the Nation, McCurdy was selected as this year’s winner for his dedication and service to ensuring safe water supplies for future generations.

The NRWA Ground Water Program started in 1991.  Since then more than 4500 local communities with populations totaling over 6 million people have taken responsibility for protecting their drinking water sources.

McCurdy joined rural water back in March of 1997.  He was part of a group of eight that also began their career on that same date.  New groundwater techs as they were called back then were sent to Duncan Oklahoma for training. David utilized his visit to Duncan to network with other Groundwater specialists and has since made life long friends.

Mr. McCurdy brought back to Rhode Island the knowledge of the many resources and tools available to groundwater specialists and has since developed more than 120 groundwater protection plans.  He has taken special efforts to produce protection plans that are exciting to community water systems.  He uses bold graphics and sharp GIS images to identify potential contamination sources.  The level of detail and valuable information in his reports makes him stand out as a groundwater protection specialist.

Working with the community is a strong attribute of McCurdy’s.  He has attended countless conservation commission meetings throughout the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island, and had been available to many schools for educational activities.  McCurdy has set up and run drinking water exhibits for more than 1,000 children.

McCurdy has an undergraduate degree in physical geography from Plymouth State College and a Masters degree in Environmental Resource Management, with a focus in groundwater management from Antioch University.  Prior to working with Rural Water, McCurdy worked as a consultant and for the State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, as a Project Manager.

The National Rural Water Association is a federation of 48 State Rural Water Associations serving over 24,558 water and wastewater utility members in 49 states with additional programs in Honduras and Puerto Rico.

NRWA members form a solid foundation for Team Rural Water.  Upholding the motto of “Quality On Tap!” Rural Water Associations provide small communities in every state with management and technical resources to supply safe and affordable water.
