Otterville Public School Accepts $1,000 Video Contest  Prize from MRWA

ASHLAND, Mo. – Otterville City Clerk Traci Schoen accepted a $1,000 check from the Missouri Rural Water Association, a prize to Otterville Public Schools for winning a statewide video contest in March.
The presentation took place, May 3rd, before an assembly of the entire student body.
The four students in the Environmental Science Class responsible for the production of the prize-winning video were Rachell Marquess, Garret Thompson, Amy Oleynik and Aubrey Brake.
“The students are positively thrilled to have won a statewide contest,”  said teacher Tonya Blades. “They worked hard on the project and learned a lot while doing it.”
The students produced a video in response to the contest theme, “How do you protect your drinking water?”
MRWA Executive Director John Hoagland congratulated the science class and the teacher for their talent and creativity.
The $1,000 prize will be used to purchase necessary equipment and supplies for the school’s science department.
This is the first year for this annual event that is intended to bridge public water systems with school systems.
“Not only did the kids learn about the importance of water quality and the importance of protecting their drinking water, they also learned video production techniques,” MRWA Event Coordinator Jim Enterline said.
Attending the presentation were Otterville School Principal Darci McFail and Otterville Water Operator Matthew Harrison.
Video submissions were uploaded onto YouTube.com and played during the 44th Annual Technical Conference and Trade Show conducted by the MRWA in Columbia March 2 - 4, 2010.  Professionals in the water and wastewater industry attending the event chose the winning video.
The Otterville Public School video garnered 50 votes out of six entries from around the State.
“All of the entries were extremely good, and it was great to see the excitement in the school assembly as Otterville was presented with the award,” Enterline said.
MRWA and the City of Otterville worked together to help sponsor a pizza party for all of the students that day to celebrate.    The Missouri Rural Water Association provides technical assistance and training to member water and wastewater systems throughout the State. The video contest is an extension of its educational role in drinking water, which challenges high school young adults to gain a heightened awareness of the valuable resource that water is in our lives.
