Rural water technicians help restore water to flood-damaged Silver Creek

Claverack, N.Y .– Heavy storms in Chautauqua County New York sent creeks spilling out of their banks and into small communities early last week. Flooding damaged the village water system, forcing the Chautauqua County Health Department to issue a boil order.
“Early on Monday, flash floods caused damage to some parts of Silver Creek’s water system,” the health department said in their release. “If the distribution loses pressure, it increases the chance that untreated water and harmful microbes could enter the system.”
Jamie Herman, a training specialist with the New York Rural Water Association and NYRWA Circuit Rider Dan Tousley arrived in the community and began a community-wide leak survey. High water created heavy damage in some neighborhoods. The sides of some homes were completely collapsed and buildings had been moved from their foundations. The Silver Village mobile home park was almost entirely destroyed by the flash floods.
The rural water technicians identified 14 trouble spots throughout the distribution system, including fire hydrants and water lines damaged by flood debris and flood clean-up.
Power was restored to the village the Wednesday following the flood, and the utility was able to pump water into their storage tanks. After a few repairs and clear water tests, the Health Department certified the water safe and lifted the boil order.
