NRWA awards two Palmer scholarships
DUNCAN, Okla. – The National Rural Water Association has
announced two recipients of the Joe and Jean Palmer Endowment
Scholarship. Niki Abrahamson, a graduate of Mount View High School in
Maine, and Whitney Condit, a graduate of Velma-Alma High School in
Oklahoma, were each awarded a four-year scholarship.
Niki is the daughter of Janet Abrahamson,
a Wastewater Technician with the Maine Rural Water Association. Niki
plans to attend the University of Maine. Abrahamson was ranked sixth in her class
with a grade point average of 3.9. She has been a member of the varsity
soccer team where she was voted captain, drama club, student council and
library club. She was on the honor roll four years, the high school
honor roll once and was named student of the month. Abrahamson was also
a member of the National Honor Society and the SHARE community-service
club and attended Dirigo Girl’s State. Whitney is the daughter of Sharon Condit, an accounting
assistant with NRWA. Whitney will attend Oklahoma State University,
beginning in the fall 2009 semester, where she will study Pre-Veterinary
Animal Science. Condit was ranked third in her class with
a grade point average of 4.0. She has been a member of the Velma-Alma
Softball Team, which made state tournament appearances three years and
finished as runner-ups during Condit’s senior year. She has also
participated in the basketball team, academic team, yearbook, Upward
Bound and Beta Club. She was selected to the Principal’s Honor Roll two
years, Superintendent’s Honor Roll once, and is a member of the National
Honor Society. Condit participated in the Miss Velma-Alma Pageant three
years and was name Miss Photogenic in 2008.
Palmer Scholarship recipients are
selected by the NRWA Scholarship Committee, based on the applicant’s
academic record, awards, honors, leadership, activities and content of a
500-word essay. The scholarship honors the memory of Joe and Jean
Palmer, as reflects their character and contributions to the rural water
industry. Joe Palmer was a retired engineer, was co-founder of the
Georgia Rural Water Association and served as President of NRWA from
1994 to 1996. Jean Palmer was a former science and chemistry teacher.
