Rural Water rushed to provide disinfection to Colorado town

From the Colorado Rural Water Association

On Friday, May 8, the Colorado Department of Health and Environment requested that the City of Monte Vista begin immediate chlorination until further notice due to the presence of total coliform bacteria in the distribution system. Monte Vista currently has a disinfection waver. There was no evidence to indicate an immediate threat to public health, and no boil or bottled water orders were in effect.
With the assistance of Colorado Rural Water Association and the City of Alamosa, Monte Vista installed chemical feed pumps for the injection of 10 percent sodium hypochlorite and the City began disinfecting their water system. Within 24 hours of the notice from the CDPHE, the Monte Vista had chlorine in the distribution. The effort was made possible by the quick response from CRWA staff, Mobile Training Unit and the chemical feed pumps and sodium hypochlorite from Alamosa. Farron Hall, Superintendent of Water and Wastewater for Alamosa, said “we were just glad to be able to help”.
