NEW ORLEANS, La. – Over 500 Rural Water
professionals flooded into New Orleans for the National
Rural Water Association’s annual training in-service, held
May 12-14.
“It was a success, we’ve had a lot of positive feedback,”
said Paul Strope, head of the NRWA’s training program.
The in-service opened with speeches by the NRWA Board
President Fred Sheldon, CEO Robert Johnson and Patrick
Credeur, executive director of the Louisiana Rural Water
Association.
“You are the face of our association,” Johnson said to the
assembled water technicians. “The assistance you provide in
the field is all some utilities know of our work.
Each state rural water association sends personnel from
their various programs, including drinking water,
wastewater, source water protection and training. In-service
is one of the programs that allow the field staff of these
state associations to keep up-to-date on the latest
regulations, funding opportunities and technical
advancement. This continued training makes the rural water
field staff the industry leader in training and technical
assistance for small water systems.
Experts and guest speakers from NRWA state affiliates, the
Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of
Agriculture Rural Utilities Service presented on a variety
of topics. Presentations ranged from information on the
Ground Water Rule, Basic Hydrology, Aquifers, and Gas
Operations Discharge to Identification of Grant Recipients,
Rate Structures, Water Sustainability, Wells and the
Check-Up Program for Small Systems. In-service also featured
a special track on Emergency Response, a course designed to
produce emergency responders to assist with disaster relief.
