Kohl named Rural Water Star

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Rural Water Association awarded Senator Herb Kohl ofNRWA President Fred Sheldon presents Senator Herb Kohl with the Star Award Wisconsin with the prestigious Rural Water Star award today during the NRWA’s Rural Water Rally in Washington, DC.
The award is to honor individuals who have gone above and beyond the everyday call of service and dedication to rural water. The award was presented on behalf of NRWA’s 26,696 member utilities, and state affiliates.
“I am truly honored to be here,” Senator Kohl said. “You all do so much to keep people healthy.”
Kohl’s positions on the Senate Appropriations Committee, including Chairman of the Subcommittee on Agriculture and Rural Development and member of the Subcommittee on Interior and Environment, have made him an invaluable friend to rural water.
“We all know about these tough economic times. In times like these, I believe we should let good, common-sense, principles guide us,” Kohl said, drawing applause from the audience. “Good water utilities are good common sense answers for rural communities.”
Kohl’s political career began in Wisconsin, including a term as the chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.  He won election to the United States Senate in 1988 with his catchphrase “nobody’s senator but yours.” He was reelected in 1994, 2000 and 2006.
“Everyone in this room knows rural water is important, because our towns, cities and villages cannot expand their opportunities without the fundamental services,” Kohl said.
“You can be sure you have an ally in me, and I know you are all allies in the work we do,” the Senator said.
The Rural Water Star is part of the NRWA’s Awards in Excellence program, which was established to recognize outstanding efforts in the rural water industry. The NRWA, American’s largest utility association, trains over 60,000 water and wastewater personnel each year through its state affiliates. State personnel in all 50 states and Puerto Rico also make over 100,000 on-site technical assistance visits a year.
