Georgia Rural Water employees, board members
appointed to councils
BARNESVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Rural Water Association will play
a key role in the future of Georgia’s water development, as two
employees and one board member have been appointed to seats on the
state’s newly-created water councils.
Doug Anderton, President of the GRWA Board and board member for the
National Rural Water Association, received an appointment, along
with Georgia Rural Water employees Jay Matthews and Cleve Edenfield.
“We feel real honored that we have three close associates appointed
to these councils,” said Jimmy Matthews, GRWA Executive Director.
The state recently created 10 regional councils to make decisions
and set policy for the development and conservation of the state’s
water resources. State and independent environmental groups watched
the appointments closely, since droughts and water rights battle
have made water resources a vital issue in the state.
Each council is composed of 25 members, each appointed by the
governor, lieutenant governor and house speaker.
Gov. Sonny Perdue, responsible for more than half the appointments,
said in a statement that those chosen are “a diverse group of
Georgians” who will “focus on water resource issues while also
addressing the state’s economic needs.”
Jimmy Matthews explained that the GRWA representatives will be
excellent additions to the councils, both because of their water
expertise and their involvement in other aspects of their
communities. Anderton is also on the Board of Directors for the
Northwest Georgia Joint Development Authority. Jay Matthews is Chair
of the County Commissioners for Lamar County and Edenfield serves in
the city government in his hometown of Swainsboro.
