ORLANDO, Fla. – Around 350 technical
experts attended the National Rural Water In-Service in
Orlando, Fla. for training and education sessions. Training
began on Sunday, June 22 and concluded Wednesday, June 25.
A group of experts and guest speakers from NRWA state
affiliates, the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S.
Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service presented
on a variety of topics. The in-service is one of the many
programs that make the Field Staff of State Association the
industry leader in training and technical assistance for
small water systems. In-service allows water and waste-water
professional from across the nation to stay up-to-date with
the latest regulations, funding opportunities and technical
advancements. These and other programs provide training and
expertise that would be otherwise unavailable to small
systems.
One of the highlights of the in-service was the
Emergency Preparedness program. Representatives from Florida
created a hands-on program that demonstrated how to use
emergency generators, portable pumps and other equipment.
The session was based on actual experiences and needs the
association encountered in their response to hurricanes
Katrina and Rita.
Some training focused on the daily operation of a water
system, including leak detection, a common and costly
problem for small systems. Undetected leaks can lead to
extensive costs due to lost water and potential
contamination of treated water. Other topics included an
array of administrative functions, including development of
training curriculum, delivering effective presentations and
compliance.
Topics ranged from technical issues like Hydrogen Sulfide
Control and Process Control for Activated Sludge to
financial process like Financial Justification for Leak
Detection and Comprehensive Water Audits. Other topics
focused on the future of water and waste water systems,
including new technologies and future planning.
