Congressman Dicks receives Rural Water Appreciation
Award
SHELTON, Wash. – The National Rural Water
Association has selected Washington
Congressman Norm Dicks as the 2008 recipient of a Rural
Water Appreciation Award.
Dicks’s efforts have increased funding for drinking water
and sewer improvements to over $1.6 billion, provided funds
for over 600 communities to protect their environment and
water supplies, and provided $11.5 million to assist
communities in compliance and improved treatment processes.
Dicks is chairman of the House of Representatives
subcommittee that funds the U. S. Environmental Protection
Agency.
“Thanks to Congressman Dicks’s effort, over $1 billion of
federal water development assistance was targeted to rural
and small community water and sewer needs,” said Rob
Johnson, CEO of the NRWA, the nation’s leading provider of
training and technical assistance to small water utilities.
“Over 40,000 rural communities received on-site technical
assistance to improve their drinking water, wastewater and
regulation compliance,” Johnson added. “We acknowledge
Congressman Dicks’s leadership in improving drinking water
and the quality of water in our rivers and lakes.”
More accomplishments for the water and environmental
initiatives Dicks supported are detailed in the NRWA 2008
report to congress, available at
www.ruralwater.org/report.
The Rural Water Appreciation Award is presented to national
leaders who have been essential in protecting and improving
the environment, public health and drinking water quality.
