Rural water associations respond to floods

Rural water associations across the Midwest are responding to recent floods caused by severe thunderstorms that swept through the area on June 4. The continuing floods have caused a number of evacuations and water boil orders. The floods have, to date, affected areas of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin, leading to 13 deaths.
Wisconsin Rural Water Association provided pumps and technical support to more than 15 communities and supplied municipal bottled water to Red Cross shelters in Sauk and Crawford counties immediately after the flood began. More than 7,500 bottles of municipal water were provided by Rural Water to families evacuated to shelters in Gays Mills and the Spring Green area. WRWA’s Emergency Trailer was dispatched, immediately after the call for bottled water was received.
Flooding has continued through much of the area, with several Mississippi levees breaking. The Illinois Rural Water Association has been assisting communities with sandbags and technical advice, but many of the water treatment and distribution facilities remain intact.
