Mississippi Rural Water hosts roundtable with Congressman Nunnelee
On
Wednesday, April 2nd at the BancorpSouth Center in Tupelo, Miss the
Mississippi Rural Water Association sponsored a Roundtable Community Meeting
with Congressman Alan Nunnelee of the 1st Congressional District. The meeting
was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There were 35 attendees who represented 25
small cities, towns and rural water associations.
The meeting began with Kirby Mayfield, CEO of MsRWA introducing Congressman Nunnelee. Congressman Nunnelee opened the meeting by talking about how important water is to communities and the economic growth in our communities and state. He mentioned a recent article in the local newspaper regarding the recent lightning storm in Columbus. The lightning storm just a day earlier had knocked out power to many residents. These residents didn’t have power for nearly 8 hours or more but were able to make it through. He went on to explain the situation would have been very different if the residents had been without water for 8 hours. Water is life’s basic necessity.
Congressman Nunnelee presently sits on the House
Agriculture Appropriations Committee and the Energy and Water Committee. He
discussed funding issues pertaining to water and waste water funding as well as
the rules and regulations utilities are facing on a day to day basis. He then
opened the floor for a Q &A session.
This was the first meeting of this kind for the MsRWA. It was such a success, and there are plans in the works to have similar meetings in each congressional district throughout the state this year.
